Are you in search of a good burrito?

There is a new comer to the Qingdao Mexican food arena - Tortillas Mexican Restaurant.  It is located at the west end of the TaiDong pedestrian walkway (taidong's shopping street). Although the food is as close to authentic Mexican food that you can get here in Qingdao, it is far from the real thing! Nevertheless they make their own flour and corn tortillas which can be purchased for home use. If you’re shopping in the TaiDong area and have a craving for a taco, burrito, or tostada give them a try. They normally do NOT put cheese on there tacos or burritos, so when you order, make sure you ask for extra cheese; the cheese that they do put on is NOT authentic “Fresco” or even cheddar!

If you like to cook you can easily make your own burritos and soft tacos at home. You can purchase your ingredients at Jusco or Metro.

Flour TortillasFlour Tortillas
2 cups corn flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons lard or vegitable oil
1 1/2 cups water

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and lard. Mix well. Stir in the water. **The dough should be slightly wet. Form the dough into a smooth ball. Divide the dough into 12 pieces. Place a little water on the hands and form the dough into small balls. Place the balls on a piece of parchment paper (12 inches by 8 1/2 inches). Using your hands, flatten the dough and form into a flat circle. Place a piece of plastic wrap over the circle. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a 6 1/2 to 7-inch circle and 1/8-inch thick. In a medium non-stick skillet, over medium heat, brown the tortillas for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Remove and place between 2 sheets of parchment paper. Repeat the above process with the remaining dough. Serve warm.
