What is Thanksgiving ?
Originally the Thanksgiving feast was really a traditional English harvest celebration that the Pilgrims shared with the Native Americans. It was also a "Thank You" gesture towards the American Indians who had taught the colonists to plant crops and hunt wild game.
Starting in 1939, seeking to lengthen the Christmas shopping season, Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. Congress passed a joint resolution in 1941 decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November, where it remains today.
For most Americans it is a time to gather with the family and give thanks for all the good things in life as well as offer a helping hand to those in need. Other than Christmas this is probably the most important annual family gathering. It is not a time to go cerebrate in restaurants or bars, in fact, most are closed! If you don't have any family, friends, or loved ones to share Thanksgiving with then local organizations always put on a feast fit for a king.
If you're stuck in Qingdao this Thanksgiving don't waste your money on some restaurant’s weak Thanksgiving dinner; instead try to meet up with some old friends and cook dinner together or have a potluck. It doesn't have to be Turkey -- take advantage of the local seafood that is in season.
