Qingdao 青岛 Style

Yeah sure … we have all heard “Gangnam Style” by the Korean pop star Psy, but you probably have never really seen how we do it here in China’s Sailing City. I miss the city I called home for 10 years, my friends, and of course that infamous – Qingdao 青岛 Style!

Qingdao (青岛) Style: Shilaoren Beach (石老人浴场), Qingdao Gala (青岛辣蛤蜊), Taidong (台东), WuSi GuangChang (五四广场), Train Station (青岛火车站), Badaguan (八大关), Seaside Scenic Pathway (栈道, 团岛到石老人), LuXun Park (鲁迅公园), Olympic Marina (青岛奥林匹克帆船中心), Ocean University of China (中国海洋大学), St. Michael’s Cathedral (圣弥爱尔大教堂), Sifang Road (四方路), Zhan Qiao (栈桥), Pi Chai Yuan (劈柴院) on Zhongshan Road (中山路), and more.

I served in the U. S. Navy from June 1943 until August 1946. In January 1946 I sailed aboard the USS Butner to Shanghai. There I went aboard the USS LCI (G) 514 (Landing Craft Infantry Gunboat). From Shanghai we sailed to Tsingao where we began training sailors of Nationalist China. I was the Executive Officer. I have photos of all our shipmates. Each day for about five months we took their officers and enlisted men out into the harbor instructing them in ship handling. In June 1946 we turned six of our LCI’s over to the Nationalists. Shortly afterward they sailed the ships to Taiwan and we boarded the USS Monrovia and headed for the States via the Panama Canal.

Very funny 🙂 I like it, also because I recognize many places where I’ve been during my stay last year.
